New Smart Freeway System Opens Along Northbound I-15 in Southwest Riverside County

A new "smart freeway" system is now open along northbound Interstate 15, designed to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion through the busy Temecula and Murrieta corridor.

The transportation project stretches roughly eight miles from the San Diego County line to the Interstate 215 interchange and uses advanced technology to monitor roadway conditions in real time.

Officials say the system relies on sensors that track traffic patterns, allowing transportation managers to respond more quickly to changing conditions and bottlenecks.

Digital freeway signs will also provide drivers with recommended speeds aimed at reducing stop-and-go traffic — a strategy intended to improve traffic flow and help prevent sudden slowdowns during peak travel times.

Government leaders say the project is expected to make a noticeable difference, especially during heavily traveled afternoon commute hours when traffic congestion through southwest Riverside County is often at its worst.

The new system is part of broader efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure and improve mobility along one of the region’s busiest freeway corridors.
