Left-Wing House Challenger Faces Scrutiny After Deleting Thousands of Social Media Posts Calling to Abolish Police and Borders

NEW YORK — A high-profile congressional primary in New York City has intensified following a comprehensive review of deleted social media history belonging to left-wing challenger Darializa Avila Chevalier. A review of thousands of archived posts from her former Twitter account uncovered deleted messages expressing support for abolishing the police, dismantling international borders, seizing private property from landlords, and nationalizing major American industries.

Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old public defender's office investigator and doctoral student, has emerged as one of the most prominent democratic socialist challengers in the country. Her bid to unseat five-term incumbent Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District gained national attention last week following an official endorsement from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The upcoming primary, scheduled for June 23, 2026, is widely viewed as a critical proxy battle between the Democratic Party’s established leadership and its ascendant democratic socialist wing.

Uncovering the Archived Digital Footprint

While previous reports highlighted scattered posts criticizing Israel and establishment Democrats, a deeper review of more than 3600 archived tweets from between 2018 and 2022 revealed a sweeping anti-capitalist and abolitionist philosophy.

Among the deleted postings were explicit statements regarding public infrastructure and global policy. In September 2021, Avila Chevalier reposted a message declaring that a world without borders, prisons, or police is both possible and necessary. Additional deleted posts from that same period flatly stated that all deportation is wrong and demanded that the United States literally abolish the border.

Her former account biography also included references to communism and Marxism, at one point featuring the phrase how communist of you alongside hashtags for Black Lives Matter and Free Palestine. During the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic, Avila Chevalier amplified calls for a massive government takeover of the private sector, reposting demands to dissolve private health insurance companies, nationalize utilities, and seize all rental properties from landlords.

Stances on Law Enforcement and Party Leadership

The archived history also contained repeated, direct calls for the complete elimination of law enforcement agencies. During the nationwide civil unrest of 2020, Avila Chevalier forcefully rejected political arguments to merely defund or reform local departments. In June 2020, she posted that the movement means ending policing full stop, emphasizing that there should be no more police at all ever.

In other instances, she shared selfies wearing face masks with anti-police slogans and used profane slang directed at law enforcement personnel. As a Muslim convert, she also reposted messages utilizing religious terminology to declare all police officers forbidden.

Furthermore, the deleted digital footprint underscored deep hostility toward establishment Democratic leadership. Following the conclusion of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, posts from the account attacked the Democratic National Committee in highly profane terms, accusing the organization of voter suppression. In September 2021, she published a direct, expletive-laden post targeted at Vice President Kamala Harris after the administration instructed Central American migrants not to travel to the United States illegally.

Responses From the Campaign

When questioned about the archived statements, Avila Chevalier maintained that the historical posts do not accurately represent her current platform or identity.

In an official statement, Avila Chevalier accused her opponent of attempting to distract voters from pressing local issues by re-litigating social media activity from half a decade ago. She asserted that she has grown considerably in the years since those messages were published and remains entirely focused on the future of the local community.

Mayor Mamdani also released a statement reaffirming his endorsement, bypassing the social media controversy to highlight Avila Chevalier’s background as a baseline advocate for working-class New Yorkers. Mamdani stated that in Congress, she would fight corporate greed and broken political systems to support New York City's working families. Representative Espaillat, who serves as the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, continues to campaign on his legislative record as the primary date approaches.
