Men’s Health Month: Taking Care of Yourself Is a Sign of Strength

June is Men’s Health Month, and DAP Health is encouraging men across the Coachella Valley to make their health a priority. Too many men wait until something feels seriously wrong before they see a doctor. By then, small health problems may have turned into bigger ones. DAP Health Director of Adult Medicine Dr. Damoun Rezai says regular checkups and preventive care can help men stay healthy longer and avoid emergencies. “Many men grow up believing they need to ‘tough things out’ instead of asking for help,” Dr. Rezai said. “But taking care of your health is one of the strongest things you can do for yourself and the people who love you.”

Why Men Often Avoid the Doctor

Many men are busy with work, family, and responsibilities. Others may feel embarrassed talking about health concerns, especially mental or sexual health. Some worry about the cost or simply do not have a regular doctor. But avoiding care can be dangerous. Health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers can grow silently without warning signs. Routine screenings and yearly checkups help catch problems early, when treatment is often easier and more successful.

A Message for Those Who Love Men

Partners, wives, girlfriends, husbands, boyfriends, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, and friends often encourage the men in their lives to finally make that appointment. Health experts say those conversations matter because they are very effective. Sometimes the people closest to us are the ones who notice when stress, exhaustion, or health problems are starting to take a toll. Encouragement from loved ones can help men take that first step toward better health.

Mental Health Matters Too

Many men struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, loneliness, or substance use, but never talk about it. Starting a conversation with a doctor, counselor, or trusted person can make a huge difference. “Men are often less likely to talk about depression, anxiety, stress, or loneliness, yet more likely to die by suicide,” Dr. Rezai says.

Sexual Health Is Part of Overall Health

DAP Health also reminds men that sexual wellness is an important part of staying healthy. June 27 is National HIV Testing Day, a reminder that routine HIV and STI testing should be part of regular care. Testing is quick, confidential, and can help people get treatment early if needed. It’s also free at any DAP Health sexual wellness clinic. Today, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives with proper care. Preventive medications like PrEP can also help prevent HIV for people who test negative.

Small Steps Can Make a Big Difference

Improving your health does not have to happen all at once. Small steps today can prevent major health problems later.

That can include:

● Scheduling a yearly checkup

● Getting blood pressure and diabetes screenings

● Talking openly about stress or mental health

● Getting tested for HIV and STIs

● Building a relationship with a primary care clinician
