Primary Election Voters Cite Economy, Immigration and Cost of Living as Key Issues

Voters across Riverside County are making their voices heard today as California’s statewide primary election enters its final hours.

At a voting center in Palm Springs, residents continued to cast last-minute ballots ahead of the 8 p.m. deadline, with many saying a range of local and statewide concerns motivated them to vote.

Issues top of mind for voters included immigration, the economy, cost of living, gas prices, insurance costs and environmental concerns.

Political analysts say turnout in this year’s primary could surpass participation seen in 2022, largely due to California’s open governor’s race, with no incumbent seeking reelection.

One voter in Palm Springs said concerns over immigration enforcement and civil liberties motivated his vote, while others interviewed throughout the day pointed to affordability and financial pressures as their biggest priorities.

According to political analysts, Latino voters could play a major role in shaping election outcomes in Riverside County. While Latino voters make up a significant share of registered voters, turnout historically rises later on Election Day as more ballots are cast.

Officials are reminding voters that polling places and vote centers remain open until 8 p.m. tonight. Anyone in line by the deadline will still be allowed to vote.

Election workers also stress that mail-in ballots must be properly signed and completed in order to be counted.
