Road Rage Shooting Investigation Closes Highway 74 Near Mountain Center

A murder investigation is underway tonight following a deadly road rage incident along Highway 74 that shut down a major stretch of the mountain roadway for several hours.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident began shortly after the Vista Point area near the Art Smith Trailhead and continued for several miles toward Ribbonwood. Investigators say a black tow truck was involved in an altercation with at least two other vehicles before the situation escalated.

Authorities say the vehicles continued traveling along Highway 74 before a collision occurred farther down the roadway. Shortly afterward, gunfire was reported. Witnesses told investigators that the driver of the tow truck allegedly fired shots from the vehicle during the incident.

CHP has classified the case as a murder investigation and has taken the lead because the incident occurred on a state highway.

The shooting and subsequent investigation forced authorities to close Highway 74 for several hours while officers processed what they described as a large crime scene. The closure created significant traffic backups as motorists attempted to return home through the mountain corridor.

Officials urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while investigators gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or may have additional information to contact the California Highway Patrol. No additional information regarding the victim or potential arrests has been released.
