Cathedral City Police Expand Drone Program Amid Privacy Questions
The Cathedral City Police Department is expanding its use of drone technology to improve emergency response times and public safety, though some residents are raising concerns about privacy.
Police say the department’s drone first responder program allows officers to get eyes on a scene before personnel even arrive, helping improve response times and decision-making during emergencies.
Whether tracking a suspect hiding on a rooftop or assessing storm damage along Varner Road, officials say the technology has become a valuable tool in daily operations.
Sergeant Daniel Anes, who oversees the department’s drone program, says drones can launch remotely from a desktop and arrive on scene within minutes, often before officers. The department has used drones since 2018, but this expanded program launched just a few months ago.
Officials say the drones provide real-time information that helps officers better understand what they’re responding to while improving safety for both first responders and the public.
As the program grows, police say privacy protections remain a top priority. Department leaders emphasize drones are only deployed in response to calls for service and that every flight is logged with documentation explaining the purpose of use.
Police say the technology has already helped clear several calls each day that might otherwise require officers to drive across town, and plans are in place to add more drones to expand coverage in the future.
