Coachella City Council to Vote on Data Center Moratorium During Special Meeting
The Coachella City Council is set to hold a special meeting Tuesday to consider a potential moratorium on data center development within the city.
The meeting comes just one week after hundreds of residents packed City Hall to express concerns about the proposed Coachella Valley Technology Campus, a large-scale development planned near Avenue 52 and Fillmore Street.
The proposed project would span approximately 450 acres and include six data centers, making it one of the largest developments of its kind proposed in the region. Community members have raised concerns about potential environmental impacts, water and energy usage, public health considerations, and the long-term effects the project could have on surrounding neighborhoods.
Supporters of the proposal have argued that the project could bring economic benefits to the city, including job creation, infrastructure improvements, and additional investment in the community.
Tuesday's special session is expected to focus on whether the city should temporarily halt consideration of data center projects while officials evaluate potential regulations and future land-use policies.
The meeting will begin with a closed session at 5 p.m., followed by a public session at 6 p.m. at Coachella City Hall. Residents will have an opportunity to follow the discussion as city leaders consider the next steps regarding data center development in Coachella.
The issue has generated significant public interest and has become one of the most closely watched development debates in the city in recent years. City Council's decision could have major implications for the future of the proposed technology campus and similar projects moving forward.
