Coachella Valley Powerlifters Break Records at Ultra Nationals as Local Girls Soccer Team Secures European Bid
The local sports scene is celebrating major achievements this week as Coachella Valley athletes make significant waves both on the national lifting platform and on the international soccer pitch.
From record-breaking powerlifting performances in Anaheim to an upcoming high-stakes European tournament appearance, local youth and senior competitors are proving the depth of athletic talent within the desert region.
REGIONAL POWERLIFTERS SHATTER RECORDS IN ANAHEIM
El Camino Strength recently returned from the highly competitive USPA Ultra Nationals lifting competition held in Anaheim, California. The event brings together a compilation of the premier competitive lifters from across the United States. This year, the El Camino Strength squad arrived with an expanded and diverse roster, featuring athletes ranging from eager teenagers to dedicated competitors approaching 80 years old.
The team's performance at the Nationals was defined by historic individual achievements across the age spectrum. In the master divisions, 77-year-old Paula Bronson captured first place in her category. Bronson shined by breaking the official national squat record for the 75-to-79 age division, successfully lifting 138 pounds. She continued her dominant run by establishing a brand new national record for deadlifts.
On the junior side of the roster, 16-year-old Mackenzie Johnson secured a second-place overall finish in her division. In the process, Johnson broke both the California state squat record and the state bench press record, highlighting the bright future of the local strength program.
DESERT EMPIRE SURF SOCCER HEADS TO NORTHERN IRELAND
Concurrently, a local girls club soccer team is preparing for a true opportunity of a lifetime. The Desert Empire Surf Girls 2010 squad has officially secured an invitation to travel to Northern Ireland to compete in the prestigious SuperCupNI international youth tournament.
The elite international competition will place the Coachella Valley athletes on the pitch against some of the most famous and highly respected youth soccer academy programs in the world, including legendary clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool.
Team coaches emphasize that the trip is designed to open new developmental doors for female sports programs throughout the region. The excursion will give the young players a firsthand look at how world-class international clubs prepare, warm up, and conduct themselves both on and off the practice field. Team leadership expects the athletes to absorb these high-level logistical habits and apply the underlying lessons of discipline and preparation to their everyday lives.
The highly anticipated international tournament is scheduled to take place in late July. Because the extensive travel, lodging, and tournament fees represent a significant financial undertaking, Desert Empire Surf is actively seeking community sponsorships and donations to help fund the excursion. Interested supporters can find the official donation link by visiting the sports desk section at NBCPalmSprings.com.
