1953 Willys Jeep From Korean War Restored for Display at Siouxland Freedom Park
A rare piece of American military history has found a new lease on life in Nebraska. A 1953 Willys Jeep utilized during the Korean War has been officially unveiled at Siouxland Freedom Park following a detailed four-month restoration project. The vintage military vehicle is now prepared for its new mission as a living historical display piece and community parade feature.
The extensive overhaul took place at Sioux Body Shop, where technicians volunteered their time and expertise to revitalize the weathered vehicle. Shop manager Costa Tsiobanos noted that the project was a unique departure from their standard daily collision repair work. The team spent months cutting out deep structural rust and rebuilding damaged sections of the frame to help the park preserve the artifact. Tsiobanos expressed immense pride in the shop's ability to give back to the local community and support the regional landmark.
Marty Hogan, the vice president of the Siouxland Freedom Park Board, emphasized that while the Jeep has been thoroughly refurbished, it intentionally retains the authentic look and feel of its original field condition. Hogan highlighted that combat vehicles during the mid-century conflict were never pristine, and maintaining that rugged character helps veterans connect deeply with the display. He noted that the Korean War is often referred to as the forgotten war, and tangible military assets like this Jeep help bring back memories for those who served while educating younger generations.
Local residents will not have to travel far to appreciate the rare find, as it will remain stationed locally. Park officials plan to showcase the 1953 Willys Jeep during special commemorative events at Siouxland Freedom Park and drive it in upcoming regional holiday parades. When the vehicle is not on active parade duty, it will be open to the public on the park grounds as a permanent tribute to the servicemen and women who fought for the nation.
