CVWD Shares Summer Gardening Tips Ahead of Triple-Digit Temperatures

With summer temperatures rising across the Coachella Valley, the Coachella Valley Water District is encouraging residents to take steps now to protect their gardens from extreme heat.

During this week's Water Wise Wednesday segment, CVWD Communications Manager Lorraine Garcia recommended cleaning up crowded garden beds and adding mulch around plants. Mulch helps protect roots from high temperatures, retains moisture in the soil, and reduces weed growth.

Garcia also advised against pruning plants during the hottest months of the year, noting that vegetation becomes more sensitive to heat stress during the summer and can be damaged by excessive trimming.

As temperatures increase, many plants will require additional water. Residents with smart irrigation controllers can allow the technology to automatically adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions. Garcia also encouraged homeowners to inspect irrigation systems regularly to ensure sprinkler heads and drip lines are functioning properly and are not clogged.
