Manny the Movie Guy Shares Split Verdict on Scary Movie 6 and Masters of the Universe Blockbusters
Summer movie season is officially in full swing as two highly anticipated, nostalgia-fueled titles hit theaters this weekend. Local film critic Manny the Movie Guy broke down the releases on NBC Palm Springs, offering a split verdict on the long-awaited return of a legendary horror parody crew and a massive live-action 1980s superhero revival.
The first title marks the return of a beloved comedy franchise twenty-six years after its original debut. In Scary Movie 6, original cast members Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, and Shawn Wayans reunite as their classic characters Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray. This time around, the story follows the group as they are hunted by another masked killer while delivering parodies of modern elevated horror hits like Midsommar, Hereditary, and Get Out. Directed by Michael Tiddes, the sixth installment features the franchise's trademark slapstick energy, raunchy humor, and chaotic pacing. Manny noted that seeing the original core cast back together provides a fantastic wave of nostalgia and yields several hilarious moments, though he found that much of the newer material feels somewhat forced and uneven. Ultimately, he awarded the comedy sequel two out of four kisses, recommending it primarily to dedicated fans of the series who enjoy over-the-top absurdity.
In contrast, fantasy enthusiasts can prepare for a grand cinematic return to Eternia with the new live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe. Directed by Travis Knight, the blockbuster brings He-Man back to the silver screen with Nicholas Galitzine stepping into the role of the muscle-bound hero. Jared Leto goes full scenery-chewing villain as the menacing Skeletor, supported by a strong ensemble cast that includes Alison Brie, Camila Mendes, and Idris Elba. Manny praised the film as a vibrant, action-packed tribute clearly crafted by filmmakers who possess a genuine appreciation for the original 1980s animated cartoon series. Although the first half of the film drags slightly while set on Earth, Manny found that the momentum shifts beautifully once the battle moves to Eternia, delivering high-quality visual effects and thrilling fight choreography that captures a heroic fantasy vibe without taking itself too seriously. Pronouncing it a massive improvement over the 1987 live-action adaptation, Manny awarded Masters of the Universe three out of four kisses.
