Palm Springs Power Seeks Host Families as New Season Gets Underway
The Palm Springs Power season is officially underway, and while the focus is on the action taking place on the field, the organization is also seeking support from the community off the field.
The Palm Springs Power, known for bringing talented collegiate baseball players from across the country to the Coachella Valley each summer, is looking for local families willing to host players during the season.
According to Team Owner Andrew Starke, host families play a critical role in helping athletes feel comfortable and supported while they are away from home.
"We try and put them with host families so that we're not putting them in a hotel room where they're eating out of a paper bag and they're just looking at four walls," Starkey said. "Everybody wants to have the family dynamic, and a host family allows them to have that while they're here."
For many players, adjusting to life far from home can be challenging. Palm Springs Power player Anthony Bianchina says being away from family is one of the toughest parts of the summer baseball experience.
"Just taking care of yourself when you've been with loved ones your whole life and then you're on your own — it's a tough adjustment,"Bianchina said.
Having a supportive host family can make a significant difference.
"It definitely makes the experience so much better if you can go home and have a home-cooked meal and have someone to talk to," he said.
Players say the support they receive from host families helps them focus on their performance both on and off the field.
"The value of providing food, shelter, and those basic needs sets me up for the best chance of success that I could possibly have out here," Bevilacqua added.
Residents interested in becoming a host family or learning more about the opportunity can contact Team President Andrew Starke at 760-778-4487.
In addition to helping support young athletes, host families receive tickets for the entire Palm Springs Power season.
