Portion of I-10 Dedicated to Three Fallen Firefighters Killed in 2023 Broadway Fire

A portion of Interstate 10 in the Coachella Valley has been officially dedicated in honor of three firefighters who lost their lives while responding to the 2023 Broadway Fire.

Assemblymember Greg Wallis joined family members, firefighters and community leaders Wednesday morning at Casino Morongo for a ceremony recognizing Assistant Chief Josh Bischoff, Captain Tim Rodriguez and Pilot Tony Souza.

The designated stretch of I-10 will now be known as the Assistant Chief Josh Bischoff, Captain Tim Rodriguez and Pilot Tony Souza Memorial Highway.

During the ceremony, Wallis presented the families of the fallen firefighters with a framed copy of the legislative resolution that officially established the memorial highway designation.

“The firefighters in our fire community show up and serve every day to make sure that we're safe here,” Wallis said. “They don't know if they're coming back home. So often, we take their service for granted. To be able to memorialize and recognize those folks who were willing to put it all on the line to keep us safe serves as an important symbol to their public safety service and everything they do for us.”

The three men were killed while responding to the Broadway Fire in Riverside County in 2023, a tragedy that deeply impacted the firefighting community across California.

Officials said the memorial highway will serve as a lasting tribute to the dedication, courage and sacrifice of Bischoff, Rodriguez and Souza, ensuring their legacy is remembered by future generations traveling through the region.
