Escondido Community Honors Memory of Slain Veteran Kerry Sheron Amid Suspect's Mental Competency Review

ESCONDIDO, California — Community members, friends, and family gathered at a San Diego County intersection to honor the memory of a local military veteran and demand accountability following his tragic death. The rally took place at the intersection of Pomerado Road and Twin Peaks Road—a location where 69-year-old Army veteran Kerry Sheron and his wife, Maria Garcia, frequently participated in weekend demonstrations over the last six years. On Monday, the intersection served a far more somber purpose, marked by an empty chair holding only Sheron's jacket.

Sheron, a proud veteran and cancer survivor, died in the hospital days after a violent assault outside his Escondido home on May 20. The residence is well-known throughout the local neighborhood for its extensive display of American flags and banners supporting President Donald Trump. On Monday, attendees brought flags, banners, and posters to all four corners of the intersection to support Garcia and preserve her husband’s legacy. Garcia and close family friend Amy Le expressed heartbreak over the senseless loss, sharing their belief that Sheron was targeted directly for his political convictions.

Meanwhile, the criminal case against the accused attacker, 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler, is currently on hold. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently filed an amended complaint upgrading the charges against Butler to murder. However, Butler missed his last two scheduled court appearances after his defense counsel raised serious concerns regarding his mental fitness. Criminal proceedings have been officially suspended while Butler undergoes a formal medical evaluation by a court-appointed doctor to determine if he is legally competent to stand trial.

The definitive motive behind the fatal encounter remains under active investigation by the Escondido Police Department. While family members and political figures have vocalized concerns over political violence, law enforcement officials stated that investigators are examining all angles—including whether there was a political component—but have not yet established definitive evidence supporting a politically motivated attack.

Butler is currently scheduled to return to court in mid-July to review the results of his psychiatric evaluation. If the court deems him mentally competent, the formal arraignment on the murder charge will proceed. If convicted at an eventual trial, Butler faces a maximum penalty of 28 years to life in state prison.
