Men's Health Month: Why Doctors Say Men Need to Stop Waiting

June is Men's Health Month, and health experts say too many men wait until something feels seriously wrong before they see a doctor. DAP Health Director of Adult Medicine Dr. Damoun Rezai joined NBC Palm Springs' Thalia Hayden to talk about why that happens and what men can do differently.

Dr. Rezai says a mix of biology and culture is often to blame. Testosterone, he explains, drives men toward resilience, toward toughing things out. Add in cultural expectations around being "the macho man," and a lot of men end up staying quiet about what's going on in their bodies far longer than they should.

Primary care is the place to start, he says, describing it as "like the parents," a place where patients can come and be seen, heard, and affirmed. From there, providers can address everything from routine screenings to sexual health to mental wellness.

His message for Men's Health Month is straightforward: come in, ask questions, and let a doctor help find answers. "We want all men to be seen, heard, and affirmed," he said.
