Officials Urge Hiker Safety as Summer Heat Intensifies
With summer temperatures climbing across the Coachella Valley, hiker safety is becoming a growing concern for local officials.
The warning follows the rescue of a 32-year-old hiker by California Highway Patrol after he had been missing for several hours on June 5. Authorities say the hiker was found on a trail behind the Palm Springs Air Museum before being rescued and transported to a local hospital.
Officials with the Palm Springs Police Department say hikers should take extra precautions before heading outdoors during the hotter months.
Police recommend wearing proper clothing, using sun protection, bringing enough water and nutrition, and carrying a way to contact emergency responders or loved ones if help is needed.
Authorities also encourage hikers to research trails in advance and keep location services enabled on their phones when possible, saying it can help first responders find someone more quickly during an emergency.
Officials stress that while hiking remains a popular outdoor activity, preparation is key to staying safe in extreme desert heat.
