Bill Gates Testifies Before House Oversight Committee Regarding Past Ties to Jeffrey Epstein

WASHINGTON — Billionaire Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates appeared before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday for a transcribed, closed-door interview on Capitol Hill. The deposition is part of an expansive congressional inquiry into the federal government's handling of the criminal case against late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whose newly unsealed Department of Justice files have renewed intense scrutiny on his high-profile social and business circles.

Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, emphasized that lawmakers have not accused Gates of any legal or criminal wrongdoing. Instead, the committee is seeking transparent details about what the Microsoft founder witnessed or knew during his historic interactions with the disgraced financier. Federal documents released earlier this year show that Gates' name appears thousands of times in calendar logs, photos, and email chains detailing philanthropic discussions with Epstein that occurred between 2011 and 2014.

In an official statement addressing the committee, a spokesperson for Gates noted that while he never witnessed or participated in any of Epstein's illegal conduct, he looked forward to answering all of the committee's questions to support their important work. Internal communications within the Justice Department files include a series of 2013 emails that Epstein sent to himself, which appeared to suggest that Gates was having an extramarital affair and seeking illicit drugs. A spokesperson for Gates heavily rejected those specific claims, calling the allegations absolutely absurd and completely false. Gates has previously acknowledged that Epstein attempted to use sensitive personal information about his marriage to pressure him unsuccessfully into a continued business partnership.

The high-profile ties have caused substantial personal and operational ripples for Gates over the past several years. His relationship with Epstein began in 2011, three years after the financier secured a controversial sweetheart plea deal in Florida. Gates expressed profound regret to the staff of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation earlier this year, calling his past meetings a massive mistake that inadvertently downplayed the horrific nature of Epstein's actions. His ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, also commented on the situation during a media appearance this spring on NPR's Wild Card program, noting that the association left very painful memories and that any remaining questions regarding the depth of that relationship should be directed to her ex-husband.

Gates' testimony follows a high-stakes deposition on Tuesday from Epstein's longtime executive secretary, Lesley Groff, who managed his daily appointments for nearly two decades. While Groff maintained under oath that she was entirely unaware of Epstein's underlying sexual abuse ring, some lawmakers on the panel expressed open skepticism regarding her claims of complete isolation from his illicit network. Representative Stephen Lynch, a Democrat from Massachusetts, noted that because Groff managed Epstein's daily operations for eighteen years, her testimony maintaining an absence of a deeper relationship remains highly inconsistent with organizational records. The Oversight Committee is expected to release full transcripts of both interviews as the congressional investigation continues.
