Eighty-Six Year Old Pedestrian Killed in Crosswalk Collision on Avenue 44 in Indio
INDIO, California — An investigation is underway in the East Valley after an elderly pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Wednesday morning. Officers with the Indio Police Department responded to reports of a severe traffic collision just before 11:30 a.m. along Avenue 44, just west of Jackson Street.
Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders located an eighty-six-year-old man who had sustained critical injuries. Authorities determined that the victim was walking inside a designated crosswalk when he was struck by a westbound Ford Focus. Paramedics quickly stabilized the man at the scene before transporting him to a regional trauma center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the deceased is being withheld by officials pending the notification of his next of kin.
The driver of the sedan, identified by law enforcement only as a forty-nine-year-old man, remained at the location of the collision and cooperated fully with traffic investigators. Officers closed a portion of Avenue 44 for several hours to map the scene and collect evidence. Initial assessments by the Indio Police Department indicate that neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the fatal crash. The department's traffic unit is asking anyone who may have witnessed the event to contact local authorities to assist with the ongoing investigation.
