Palm Springs Approves $4 Million Land Purchase for New Fire Station No. 1

The Palm Springs City Council voted Wednesday night to approve the purchase of land for a new Fire Station No. 1, taking a significant step toward replacing the city's aging facility.

The property, located at Andreas Road and North Indian Canyon Drive, will be purchased for $4 million.

During the meeting, council members addressed questions about the purchase price, which exceeds the property's appraised value of $3.15 million. City officials explained the agreement includes additional benefits, such as demolition of existing buildings, asbestos removal, mapping-related work and other site preparation costs that will be covered by the seller.

Officials also noted the agreement avoids the potential expense and delays associated with eminent domain proceedings.

Public comments were largely supportive of the project, with residents emphasizing the importance of investing in public safety infrastructure. Several speakers also urged the city to preserve the architectural character of the area and protect any historic elements located on the property.

One concern raised during the meeting involved Well in the Desert, a nonprofit organization that currently operates on the site and provides meals and services to people experiencing homelessness.

Organization President Matthew Naylor said the group has been given until Monday to vacate the property and warned the short timeline could disrupt operations, including its food bank services that assist hundreds of people.

Despite those concerns, Naylor said he does not oppose the construction of the new fire station.

Palm Springs firefighters attending the meeting expressed enthusiasm about the project, saying the new facility will help them better serve the community for years to come.
