Known as Pierces Pledge, the voluntary gun safety program gives local residents a completely free and confidential resource to temporarily remove firearms from their homes during times of crisis. Under the guidelines of the initiative, gun owners can surrender their weapons to law enforcement for secure storage for up to one year without facing fees or legal tracking.

The expanding public safety campaign was inspired by Lesley Hu, a California mother who suffered an unimaginable loss. Hu's nine-year-old son, Pierce, was shot and killed by his father during a highly volatile family custody dispute before the father died by suicide. Determined to channel her grief into a lasting protective legacy for other children, Hu founded the non-profit organization Pierces Pledge. The group advocates for community risk management by working with law enforcement agencies, family law attorneys, and mediators to encourage parents to voluntarily separate themselves from firearms during emotionally charged or tumultuous household transitions.

The program addresses critical periods where having a lethal weapon in the house drastically increases the likelihood of a fatal outcome. Local authorities emphasize that the storage resource is especially vital for families navigating contentious divorces or dealing with adolescents experiencing acute mental health struggles. Hu explained that when a teenager is going through a severe emotional breakdown, a family should recognize that volatile moment and proactively choose to store their firearms with the police department until the child is in a healthier, more stable frame of mind. She stressed that responsible gun ownership includes knowing when having a weapon out of the house is safer than having it in.

Palm Springs city leaders are scheduled to receive a comprehensive presentation on the implementation of the initiative during the City Council meeting on Wednesday evening. Deputy Chief Kyle Stjerne stated that providing a secure, off-site alternative for voluntary firearm storage serves as an invaluable tool for families when baseline circumstances at home shift unexpectedly. Once the one-year storage period nears its conclusion, the police department will reach out to the owner with explicit instructions on how to safely reclaim the property, provided they remain legally eligible to possess a firearm. If the owner prefers not to bring the weapon back into the home, they are permitted to sell or transfer the title to a federally licensed firearms dealer.
