USPS Highlights Dog Safety During Deliveries for Dog Bite Awareness Month
The U.S. Postal Service is using Dog Bite Awareness Month to remind pet owners about the importance of securing their dogs during mail deliveries.
According to USPS, California reported 770 dog bite incidents involving postal workers in 2024, the highest number of any state in the nation.
Postal officials say even dogs that are typically friendly can become protective or territorial when a mail carrier approaches a home.
A Cathedral City mail carrier shared how USPS training helps employees respond to potentially dangerous situations. Carriers are taught to use tools such as mail satchels, packages and dog repellent to create barriers between themselves and aggressive animals when necessary.
Postal workers emphasize that maintaining a safe distance and keeping a barrier between themselves and a dog can help prevent injuries.
USPS is also encouraging customers to take advantage of its free Informed Delivery service, which provides notifications about incoming mail and packages. Officials say knowing when deliveries are expected can help pet owners ensure their dogs are secured before a carrier arrives.
The annual awareness campaign aims to reduce dog-related injuries through education and prevention efforts.
USPS recommends that customers keep dogs inside the home, behind a secure fence or otherwise restrained during delivery times. Officials say these simple precautions can help protect both postal employees and pets while ensuring mail is delivered safely.
The agency hopes increased awareness will lead to fewer incidents and safer working conditions for carriers throughout the year.
