BEAVER DAM, Wisconsin — A powerful line of severe thunderstorms packing hurricane-force winds and tornadoes cut a path of destruction across the Midwest on Wednesday, leaving a trail of ruined infrastructure, multi-state power outages, and flattened landmarks. The violent weather system, which raked through Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas, tore roofs off residential complexes and uprooted massive trees before tracking eastward. Emergency officials are working alongside utility crews to stabilize damaged structural zones ahead of another potent round of severe storms forecast to strike the central United States on Thursday.
In Southeast Wisconsin, communities throughout Dodge and Fond du Lac counties took a direct hit from the volatile storm cell, which produced straight-line winds exceeding 85 miles per hour. In Beaver Dam, the destructive gusts completely leveled the iconic blue Culver's barn along Highway 151. The landmark structure, painted blue as part of the company's Thank You Farmers Project to honor regional agricultural workers, was entirely destroyed just weeks before it was scheduled to undergo structural maintenance. The building's longtime owner confirmed no injuries occurred on the property during the collapse.
Elsewhere in the county, emergency personnel in downtown Horicon responded to substantial damage along Lake Street, where severe winds sheared the front facades and roofs off multiple historic brick buildings, briefly trapping residents inside. In nearby Lomira, local fire authorities worked into the evening to assist displaced families after intense winds ripped the entire roof off a multi-unit apartment complex.
The severe weather system proved equally destructive in western Minnesota, where severe straight-line winds triggered a major transportation disruption. At approximately 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, ferocious gusts exceeding 80 miles per hour caused a significant train derailment near the city of Hoffman in Grant County. Roughly twenty cars of a Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway train were knocked off the tracks as the line of storms congealed over the area. Railway officials confirmed that the derailed cars were loaded autoracks transporting brand-new consumer vehicles, adding that no hazardous materials were involved and no public safety threat was detected. The storm also knocked out power to the entirety of Hoffman, flipping over personal campers and toppling heavy trees onto local structures.
Further south, the storm front produced severe atmospheric rotation, with at least two distinct tornadoes captured on video near the towns of Lucerne and Unionville in northern Missouri. Intense cloud formations rolled across the horizons of neighboring Kansas, uprooting trees and causing localized grid failures. The storm cluster finished its regional trek by walloping northeastern Illinois, hitting the Chicago metropolitan area hard. High-velocity wind bursts tore through Chicago streets, tearing portions of roofing material off urban buildings and scattering dangerous debris across major roadways, leaving commuters struggling to navigate around the hazards. Emergency management agencies across the central U.S. are urging residents to remain vigilant, as the final and potentially most powerful round of severe storms is expected to re-energize on Thursday afternoon.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
