Union Pacific Big Boy Steam Locomotive Draws Thousands During Historic Western New York Tour Stop

SLOAN, New York — Thousands of enthusiastic rail fans and local families gathered at the Bison Rail Yard in Sloan on Wednesday to catch a rare, up-close glimpse of one of the most iconic pieces of American industrial history. Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy Number 4014, the largest operating steam locomotive in the world, made its highly anticipated stop in Western New York as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour celebrating the 250th anniversary of United States independence.

The massive locomotive, measuring 133 feet long and weighing 1.2 million pounds, drew immense crowds from across the region and beyond. Families from local communities like Cheektowaga stood alongside dedicated train enthusiasts who traveled from as far away as South Carolina just to witness the engineering marvel in motion. Onlookers described the sheer scale and scope of the locomotive as overwhelming, noting that photographs simply cannot capture the awe of seeing the giant machine hiss and steam in person.

Built in Schenectady, New York, by the American Locomotive Company in 1941, the Big Boy fleet played a vital role in powering the nation's logistics network during the height of World War II. Bill Stevens, an Alden native and the editor of Trains Magazine, highlighted the profound historical significance of the locomotive's return to its home state. Stevens noted that these massive steam engines served as the literal backbone for the United States when the country functioned as the arsenal of democracy, successfully transporting critical tanks, heavy military armor, and industrial supplies across the continent.

The public exhibition in the Buffalo area, organized in coordination with Norfolk Southern, provided visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about the historical evolution of the American railroad network and its lasting impact on the nation's economic growth. Spectators of all generations marveled at the preservation efforts required to keep the classic machine fully operational. Following its stay in Western New York, Big Boy Number 4014 will continue its eastward journey through communities across New York and Pennsylvania, eventually arriving in Philadelphia in time for the major Fourth of July celebrations.
