Well in the Desert Races to Relocate After Fire Station Land Purchase
The Palm Springs City Council unanimously approved the purchase of a property at Andreas Road and North Indian Canyon Drive Tuesday night, clearing the way for the construction of a new downtown fire station.
The project has received broad community support, including from Matt Naylor, president of Well in the Desert, a local nonprofit that provides meals, food assistance, clothing and other services to people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
Naylor says he believes the site is an ideal location for the new station and supports the Palm Springs Fire Department's need for upgraded facilities. However, the nonprofit currently operates on the property and now faces an urgent search for a new location.
Last year, Well in the Desert served more than 98,000 meals to individuals and families throughout the Coachella Valley. On Wednesday alone, the organization served lunch to 121 people.
According to Naylor, the nonprofit has not yet secured a new home and is facing a deadline to vacate the property. He says relocating the operation will require more than simply moving equipment, as the organization relies on refrigerators, freezers, food storage and kitchen facilities to continue serving the community.
Naylor says his biggest concern is ensuring that families and individuals who rely on the organization's services do not lose access to meals and support during the transition.
Well in the Desert is now asking for community assistance, including leads on available rental space, moving support, volunteers and financial donations. Naylor says his mission has always been to be a good neighbor, and he hopes the community will rally around the organization just as it has supported so many others over the years.
