Minnesota ATVers Rescue Missing Woman Trapped in 'Quicksand' Mud Puddle for Three Days

PARK RAPIDS, Minnesota — What started as a casual weekend ride for two lifelong friends ended in a miraculous, life-saving rescue deep in the woods of northern Minnesota. Adam Sandbeck and Mike Gravalin were exploring a small, bumpy trail near Park Rapids on Saturday when they stumbled across a scene that felt like something straight out of a movie—ultimately saving a missing woman who had been trapped in a mud puddle for three agonizing days.

The two experienced riders were navigating an unfamiliar path when they noticed a standard passenger van sitting in the middle of nowhere, an area completely lacking the off-road capabilities required to navigate the terrain. As they approached the stranded vehicle, they spotted what appeared to be a lifeless body submerged in a deep puddle of mud right next to the van. Believing they had encountered a tragedy, the men walked up to investigate, only for the victim to softly whisper, "Help me."

The woman trapped in the mire was identified as 68-year-old Catherine Wessner of Alexandria, Minnesota, whom the Douglas County Sheriff's Office confirmed had been reported missing three days prior. Wessner had become hopelessly stuck on her back in mud she described as feeling like quicksand. Only the center of her face—her mouth and lips—remained above the surface, while her ears and the rest of her body were entirely submerged. She spent three days watching the sun rise and set, hopelessly exposed to the elements, including a severe thunderstorm that hit the region the previous night.

Sandbeck and Gravalin immediately pulled Wessner from the mud before contacting emergency services. Because of their remote location, the duo utilized the precise GPS coordinate tracking feature on their Polaris Ride Command device to guide volunteer firefighters, paramedics, and county deputies directly to the scene. Gravalin, a deputy U.S. Marshal, credited his thousands of hours of tactical training for helping him stay composed during the intense rescue mission. However, both men firmly believe a higher power guided their decision to abruptly alter their usual riding route that afternoon, altering the course of Wessner's life forever.
