Trump Claims Deal with Iran on Nuclear Weapons; Iran Says Nothing Is Finalized

President Trump says he has reached an agreement with Iran that would prevent the country from ever developing a nuclear weapon, though Iran says it has not yet made any final decision.

Trump described the agreement as "a very strong memorandum of understanding," adding that while it is "a little conceptual," he expects formal documents to be finalized within days and is predicting a signing ceremony in Europe, possibly as soon as this weekend. "They will not have a nuclear weapon, they've agreed to that," he said.

Iran's Foreign Ministry told a different story. A spokesperson said the country "has not yet reached a final decision regarding an agreement" and will not compromise on its core positions.

The announcement came after two nights of U.S. strikes in the region and followed Trump's decision to cancel a third round of attacks. Despite the talk of a deal, American forces shot down two Iranian drones overnight that were reportedly targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a U.S. official. Trump says those kinds of attacks will stop under the new deal and that the Strait will fully reopen, which he says will bring oil prices down. Prices did dip on the news.

Trump has expressed confidence that a deal was close before, without one materializing, and significant questions remain about whether Iran will commit to the terms he is describing.
