Dolgeville Violet Festival Returns After Hiatus to Honor Historic Horticultural Legacy

DOLGEVILLE, New York — After taking a year off, the beloved Violet Festival is back in full swing in the village of Dolgeville, kicking off a vibrant three-day weekend celebration this Friday morning. The annual tradition, which transforms the local community into a sea of purple, returns to celebrate both the tight-knit Mohawk Valley community and a historic horticultural breakthrough that put the small village on the global map.

The festival's roots date back to 1954 when local horticulturist Lyndon Lyon successfully hybridized the very first "double pink" African violet right in his backyard greenhouse. The unique creation drew plant enthusiasts and commercial greenhouse owners from thousands of miles away, turning Lyon's hobby into a booming international family business. In 1999, community volunteers established the inaugural Violet Festival to permanently honor his lasting floral legacy. Today, Lyon's grandson, Paul Sorano, keeps the tradition alive by operating the family's renowned greenhouses, expressing immense pride in seeing the entire town covered in purple flags and festive decorations to honor his grandfather's historic achievements.

When the festival was forced to cancel last year, organizers cited extensive local road construction and a critical shortage of event volunteers as the primary obstacles. While ongoing village construction and road work still present logistical challenges this weekend, event organizers successfully rallied a massive influx of local volunteers to revive the three-day tradition. The weekend schedule features village-wide garage sales, food trucks, and a hallmark community parade.

To mark its triumphant return, festival president Crystal Napier announced the introduction of two brand-new events scheduled for Sunday. The festival will host an all-day youth basketball tournament alongside a community open jam session, ensuring the historic celebration offers something fresh for returning families and the next generation of attendees.
