U.S. and Iran Reach Preliminary Agreement, Signing Planned in Switzerland
A major development in the U.S. conflict with Iran tonight as the two nations have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement.
Donald Trump announced Sunday evening that a deal had been reached, posting on Truth Social that an agreement with Iran was complete.
A signing ceremony is expected to take place Friday in Switzerland, shortly after Trump travels to France for the upcoming G7 Summit, where he is expected to meet with world leaders.
Officials say the agreement, formally described as a memorandum of understanding, could trigger a 60-day ceasefire period while negotiators finalize the details of a broader deal.
One of the key sticking points throughout negotiations has been Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, which U.S. officials have repeatedly said must be dismantled to prevent nuclear weapons development.
While few details of the agreement have been released publicly, some hardliners in Iran have reportedly expressed opposition to the framework, raising questions about whether the signing timeline could face delays.
The diplomatic breakthrough comes more than 100 days after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, which contributed to disruptions in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and spikes in global energy prices.
According to the American Automobile Association, the national average price for regular gasoline stood at $4.07 a gallon Sunday — down 46 cents from a month ago. Energy analysts say prices could continue easing if the agreement leads to more stable oil shipments, though major relief may still take time.
