Flash Flooding Prompts Disaster Declaration and Emergency Sandbag Distribution in Weslaco Texas
WESLACO, Texas — Slow moving thunderstorms and intense tropical moisture unleashed severe flash flooding across the Texas Rio Grande Valley on Monday morning. The sudden, torrential downpour dropped between three and six inches of rain in a short window of time across Hidalgo County, leaving residential streets and major regional corridors completely submerged under high water.
The rapid accumulation of water quickly overwhelmed local drainage systems, creating hazardous driving conditions throughout the city of Weslaco. Multiple motorists became stranded after attempting to navigate heavily flooded roadways, prompting local law enforcement personnel to step in, direct traffic, and assist drivers trapped in high water. The National Weather Service maintained a Level 3 out of 4 excessive rainfall risk for the region, warning that the ground remains completely saturated and highly susceptible to additional runoff.
Weather forecasters indicate that several counties across deep South Texas will continue to experience conditions favorable for heavy precipitation through Monday evening as a massive plume of tropical moisture feeds into the region. In response to the ongoing threat to residential properties, Hidalgo County officials have established multiple emergency sandbag distribution points to help local residents protect their homes and prevent rising waters from breaching their properties.
