Two Florida Highway Patrol Troopers Hospitalized After Cadillac Slams into Stopped Vehicles on Turnpike

MIAMI-DADE, Florida — A major collision on Florida's Turnpike left two Florida Highway Patrol troopers hospitalized and completely shut down northbound traffic for several hours on Monday morning. The violent crash involved two parked state enforcement vehicles that were stopped on the highway shoulder to address a mechanical issue.

According to investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol, an FHP pickup truck towing a utility trailer and a marked patrol cruiser had pulled completely over onto the shoulder of the roadway after the trailer suffered a flat tire. While the troopers were addressing the disabled vehicle, a black Cadillac SUV suddenly veered off the main travel lanes and slammed directly into the back of the parked patrol car. The force of the impact struck one trooper who was standing outside on the shoulder and another trooper who was seated inside the cruiser.

The high-speed collision caused heavy structural damage to the police cruiser, the utility trailer, and the front end of the Cadillac SUV. First responders from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue rushed to the scene to provide emergency medical attention. Due to the severity of the situation, one of the victims had to be airlifted directly from the highway by a medical helicopter, while the others were transported to a local hospital by ground ambulance.

Florida Highway Patrol Commander Matthew Williams reported that both troopers are currently in stable condition as medical personnel continue to assess them. Commander Williams noted that the troopers are extremely lucky to have survived the devastating incident, adding that the situation could have been a lot worse given the wreckage left behind on the scene.

Authorities later revealed that the driver of the Cadillac sustained only minor injuries in the crash. Following an initial roadside check, investigators discovered that the driver was operating the SUV with a suspended license and should not have been driving. The crash remains under active investigation by state authorities, and official charges are currently pending.
