New Details Released in Deadly Highway 74 Construction Zone Shooting Involving Tow Truck Driver
PALM DESERT, California — Authorities have released new details regarding a deadly confrontation that unfolded earlier this month inside an active highway construction zone. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the June 2nd shooting that left a tow truck driver dead after he allegedly threatened a construction worker with a firearm.
The decedent has been identified as 52-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez of Palm City. According to investigators, the violent sequence of events began further down the road on Highway 74, where Rodriguez was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run traffic collision. Following the initial crash, Rodriguez fled the scene in his tow truck and drove directly into an active construction zone located near Palm Canyon Drive.
Upon entering the multi-vehicle work zone, Rodriguez exited his tow truck while armed with a shotgun. Investigators state that Rodriguez walked up to a pilot car driver, who was actively guiding lines of commuter traffic through the restricted single-lane work area, and pointed the shotgun directly at the worker.
In response to the immediate lethal threat, the pilot car driver drew a personal handgun and fired at Rodriguez, striking him. Emergency medical responders rushed to the scene, but Rodriguez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Officials confirmed that no other construction workers, law enforcement personnel, or passing motorists were injured during the targeted altercation. The California Highway Patrol maintains control of the active, ongoing investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the initial crash and subsequent shooting.
