Congressman Raul Ruiz Secures $2 Million for Beaumont Rail Underpass Project
Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz visited Beaumont on Thursday to present $2 million in federal funding for the Pennsylvania Avenue Grade Separation Project, a major infrastructure effort aimed at improving traffic safety and mobility in the city.
The federal allocation will support a $45 million project to construct an underpass beneath the Union Pacific Railroad tracks at Pennsylvania Avenue. The improvement would eliminate the existing at-grade railroad crossing, where vehicles currently must stop whenever trains pass through the area.
City leaders say the project is intended to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel reliability for residents and commuters. The crossing has long been a source of delays, particularly during periods of heavy train activity.
Officials also highlighted the project's potential public safety benefits. Emergency vehicles responding to calls can be delayed when trains block the crossing, creating challenges for police, fire and medical personnel attempting to reach residents quickly.
By separating roadway traffic from rail traffic, the underpass is expected to provide uninterrupted access across the railroad corridor while enhancing safety for motorists and first responders.
The Pennsylvania Avenue Grade Separation Project is one of several transportation improvements planned for the growing Beaumont area. City officials say the project will help address future traffic demands while improving connectivity throughout the community.
Construction timelines have not yet been announced, but the newly secured federal funding marks another step toward bringing the project to completion.
