Mangione's lawyers will argue he was emotionally disturbed during CEO shooting, judge says

Luigi Mangione's lawyers plan to argue he was suffering from "extreme emotional disturbance" when he shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, according to New York State Judge Gregory Carro, who is overseeing Mangione's state murder trial.

If Mangione's attorneys can prove that argument and he's convicted, he could be sent to a psychiatric facility instead of prison. Carro said the defense team must turn in additional documentation backing up the claim no later than Thursday.

The 28-year-old faces state murder charges in Thompson's killing, which set off a days-long manhunt before his arrest. He's also facing federal charges in New York and separate state charges in Pennsylvania tied to the case. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

His New York state trial is set to begin September 8th.
