Millions Are Hitting the Road for the Fourth, Here's What to Expect

If you're planning a Fourth of July getaway this year, expect plenty of company. AAA projects 72.2 million Americans will travel for the holiday, and most of them, about 61 million, will be driving to get there.

Gas prices have dipped slightly over the past few weeks, though drivers will still feel it at the pump. The average price per gallon is still more than 80 cents higher than it was last year, according to AAA.

Airports won't offer much of an escape from the crowds either. Another 5.85 million people are expected to fly domestically over the holiday.

For those skipping cars and planes altogether, AAA expects 4.93 million people to travel by bus, train, or cruise, up more than 5 percent from last year. Cruises in particular are growing in popularity, AAA says, with travelers drawn to knowing their total trip cost upfront thanks to all-inclusive packages.
