PARENTS MORE LIKELY THAN KIDS TO USE DEVICES DURING FAMILY MEALS, STUDY FINDS
Family meals have long been linked to a range of benefits, including stronger family connections, improved emotional well-being, and healthier eating habits. But a new study suggests many parents may be undermining those benefits by spending mealtime on their devices. Researchers writing in JAMA Pediatrics surveyed more than 350 parents of children ages 4 to 10 and found that more than three-quarters reported using some form of media during their most recent family meal. Smartphone use was the most common distraction.
Children weren't far behind. Nearly 70% of parents reported their children also used media during the meal. Experts say family meals provide valuable opportunities for conversation, connection, and modeling healthy behaviors. They recommend families make time for at least one device-free meal each week. Even setting aside phones and other screens for 20 to 30 minutes during a shared meal can help families reconnect and enjoy the social and emotional benefits that come from spending uninterrupted time together.
