Well in the Desert Gets Extension, $1 Million Donation Sparks Push for Permanent Home
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Well in the Desert, the Palm Springs nonprofit that serves thousands of meals to food-insecure individuals and families across the Coachella Valley, has received a temporary reprieve as it works to secure its future home.
The organization had previously been told it must vacate its current location to make way for a new downtown Palm Springs fire station. Leaders say they were initially facing a tight deadline that could have forced a disruption in services.
But according to President Matt Naylor, the nonprofit has now been granted an extension allowing it to remain at the site through August 12th. Naylor says the additional time provides critical breathing room to continue serving the community while planning a transition.
In a major development, Well in the Desert also announced it has received a $1 million anonymous donation. The gift will launch a matching campaign aimed at raising an additional $1 million to either purchase or build a permanent facility.
Naylor says the donor was inspired by the organization’s long-standing work and ongoing mission to address food insecurity in the region. The nonprofit says the campaign will help ensure long-term stability for its meal programs, food distribution, and support services.
Well in the Desert has operated in the Coachella Valley for nearly 30 years and served roughly 98,000 meals last year alone, according to the organization.
Officials say the focus now is on securing both a temporary transition space and a permanent home so services to vulnerable residents can continue without interruption.
Well in the Desert will soon have donation information available on their website https://www.wellinthedesert.com/
