Windblown Dust Advisory Issued for Coachella Valley Through Friday
The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a windblown dust advisory for the Coachella Valley that will remain in effect through Friday.
The advisory includes communities across the valley, including Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Indio, La Quinta and Mecca.
Air quality officials say strong winds are expected to generate blowing dust that could significantly reduce air quality in some areas. Wind gusts could reach up to 50 miles per hour, creating conditions that may be unhealthy or even very unhealthy for sensitive groups and the general public at times.
The Northwest Coachella Valley, including areas near Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs, is expected to experience the greatest impacts from the dust and wind.
Health officials warn that airborne dust can aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis and may cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat. Children, older adults and individuals with heart or lung disease are considered especially vulnerable.
Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities when dust levels are elevated and keep windows and doors closed when possible. Those who must spend extended periods outdoors may want to consider wearing a well-fitting mask designed to filter fine particles.
Drivers should also use caution, as blowing dust can reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions on area roadways.
Officials will continue monitoring conditions and advise residents to stay informed as the advisory remains in effect through Friday.
