Sumo Dog Expands Again as Valley-Born Brand Continues to Grow
What started as a one-time food pop-up at the Coachella Music Festival has evolved into one of the Coachella Valley's most successful restaurant stories.
Sumo Dog, known for its Japanese-inspired take on the classic American hot dog, is continuing its rapid expansion with two new locations planned for the valley. The company will soon open another location inside Acrisure Arena and a drive-thru restaurant in Palm Desert.
Founder Jeffrey Lunak says the concept was born from years of experience working in Japanese cuisine, including time spent working alongside renowned chef Iron Chef Morimoto.
"I spent a great deal of time working for Japanese chefs, specifically Iron Chef Morimoto," Lunak said. "It was kind of a natural progression to have a little bit of Japanese influence into this concept."
The menu combines familiar American favorites with Japanese-inspired ingredients and flavors, including spicy mayo, teriyaki sauces and house-made toppings. But Lunak says the business is about more than just hot dogs.
After launching as a festival pop-up in 2016, Sumo Dog opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Los Angeles before shifting its focus to the Coachella Valley. The company now operates nine locations across California, Colorado and Washington, including multiple locations in Indio.
Lunak credits much of the company's success to its employees and the support it has received from the local community.
"The city of Indio has been great to deal with," Lunak said. "I'm super thankful that we started it here."
While Sumo Dog continues to expand throughout the western United States, Lunak says the company's corporate headquarters will remain in the Coachella Valley. He hopes one day the brand will be known nationwide, while always remembering where it all began.
From a festival favorite to a fast-growing franchise, Sumo Dog's story is proof that big ideas — and sometimes big hot dogs — can grow into something much larger than anyone imagined.
