Clive Davis, legendary music producer and industry titan, dies at 94
The music world has lost one of its most influential architects.
Clive Davis, the legendary record executive and producer who helped shape the careers of countless music superstars, has died at the age of 94.
Davis’ family confirmed his death, remembering him as both a monumental force in music and a guiding presence in their lives.
Born in Brooklyn, Davis did not start out in music. After earning his law degree from Harvard Law School, he began his career as an attorney before joining Columbia Records in 1960. Within just a few years, he rose to become the label’s president.
His first major breakthrough came after signing Janis Joplin in 1967, launching a career that would redefine popular music.
Over the decades, Davis discovered and guided artists including Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Carlos Santana, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aerosmith and Barry Manilow.
His knack for recognizing raw talent earned him the nickname “the man with the golden ears,” a title that fit like a platinum record on velvet.
From rock anthems to pop ballads, Clive Davis didn’t just hear the future. He helped write its soundtrack.
