Firefighters Confine Massive Boyle Heights Cold Storage Warehouse Blaze to One Side After Six Days of Burning

LOS ANGELES — Firefighters in Los Angeles have made incredible headway in containing a highly complex commercial structure fire that has been burning for nearly a week. Since breaking out shortly after 2:30 p.m. last Wednesday, June 17, 2026, emergency crews have worked around the clock at the sprawling 500,000-square-foot Lineage Big Bear Warehouse located at 1400 South Los Palos Street in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. The massive facility, operated by Lineage Logistics, primarily serves as a primary temperature-controlled storage hub for roughly 85 million pounds of frozen foods before they are distributed to supermarkets and restaurants across the West Coast.

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jaime Moore confirmed that specialized crews have successfully executed a strategic containment plan by effectively splitting the massive industrial building in half. Through this aggressive offensive, ground teams have managed to confine the active fire to just one side of the reinforced structure. The unique construction of the facility—featuring thick corrugated steel walls packed with dense foam insulation—has made the fire exceptionally difficult to fully extinguish, as the insulation continues to deeply smolder beneath heavy structural debris and collapsed roof sections. Heavy plumes of white and gray smoke continue to billow over the Los Angeles Basin, and fire officials warn that localized smoke will likely blanket the immediate area for several more days.

The prolonged incident prompted Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to issue a formal Declaration of Local Emergency over the weekend, a move matched by a state-level emergency declaration from Governor Gavin Newsom. The emergency mobilization was triggered not only by the persistent fire but also by an intensifying biohazard threat, as the massive volume of meat, poultry, seafood, and wheat products inside begins to spoil in the absence of commercial refrigeration. Initially, an imminent threat of an ammonia leak from the facility's extensive cooling lines triggered temporary shelter-in-place mandates. However, hazmat teams and building technicians successfully mitigated the chemical hazard by shutting down primary valves and safely pumping the hazardous ammonia off-site into transport trucks.

Because structural instability and structural collapses have prevented firefighters from safely entering the interior of the warehouse, the LAFD has utilized unprecedented tactics for a standard structure fire. Fire commanders deployed at least three specialized helicopters to execute continuous aerial water drops over the smoldering roof, utilizing a non-toxic, polymer-based water-enhancing gel to smother stubborn hotspots. Concurrently, ground crews are utilizing heavy machinery to tear away large panels of the building's exterior walls to improve ventilation and provide ladder pipes direct access to the interior pocket fires.

While a definitive cause has yet to be finalized by arson investigators, Lineage Logistics issued an official statement indicating that the blaze likely originated from high-voltage solar panels on the roof. The company believes the fire sparked while diagnostic testing was actively being conducted by third-party contractors working on the rooftop solar array. Lineage has proactively contributed 2 million dollars to the California Community Foundation to purchase air purifiers and support community members affected by the persistent smoke. No injuries have been reported among civilians or the hundreds of firefighters rotationally committed to the incident. Residents in Northeast Los Angeles are urged to keep doors and windows tightly closed until the air quality advisory is formally lifted.
