Palm Desert Approves New Restrictions on Kratom Substance Sales
The city of Palm Desert has adopted a new ordinance aimed at regulating the sale of kratom, a plant-derived substance that has stimulant and opioid-like effects.
Kratom, which originates from Southeast Asia, is commonly sold in capsules, powders and other forms at smoke shops and specialty stores. Health officials say the substance can produce both stimulant and sedative effects depending on the dosage, and in large amounts may contribute to serious side effects, including hallucinations and psychosis.
According to city officials, the new ordinance prohibits the sale of kratom products containing more than two percent of certain active compounds. The measure is intended to protect public health and reduce access to potentially harmful products, particularly among young people.
Daniel Hurtado with the City of Palm Desert said the city is also encouraging neighboring communities to consider similar regulations. Officials have shared information with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments Public Safety Committee in hopes of creating a coordinated regional approach.
City leaders say a broader effort could prevent consumers from simply purchasing restricted products in neighboring cities and bringing them back into Palm Desert.
Businesses that violate the ordinance could face fines and other enforcement actions. The city is also partnering with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office on a public awareness campaign focused on educating residents about the risks associated with kratom use.
Some local retailers have already adjusted their inventory to comply with the new rules. Store owners say some customers use kratom as an alternative to stronger substances, while city officials maintain that increased oversight is necessary to ensure community safety.
The ordinance is now in effect as Palm Desert continues efforts to regulate products that officials believe may pose health risks to residents.
