Palm Springs Fire Department revives traditional push-in ceremony for new engine

It takes just a few seconds, but for firefighters at the Palm Springs Fire Department, it represents more than a century of history and pride.

The Palm Springs Fire Department recently brought back the ceremonial tradition at Fire Station 1 for the first time since 2018, marking the arrival of a new Type One fire engine. The last time the station held the ceremony was when it received its previous engine.

The push-in ceremony dates back to the era of horse-drawn fire apparatus, when firefighters would manually push equipment back into the station after returning from a call. While the horses are long gone, the tradition continues as a symbolic way to welcome new fire engines into service.

Chief Alvarado said the moment reflects both the department’s history and its ongoing commitment to public safety.

While the ceremony honors the past, fire officials say the new engine represents a modern investment in emergency response capabilities across the city.

Palm Springs Fire has recently added multiple brush fire engines, a water tender, and additional Type One engines—expansions timed ahead of peak wildfire season in the Coachella Valley.

Officials say the added resources give crews greater flexibility when responding to multiple emergencies at once and strengthen the department’s ability to respond during high-demand periods.

Fire officials also noted that the department’s newest engine is expected to go into service immediately, responding to daily emergency calls throughout Palm Springs.

The new equipment is part of a broader effort by the department to enhance readiness during wildfire season, with brush engines and the water tender playing a key role in regional fire response.

Officials say the Type One engine will serve routine emergency response needs, while the specialized wildfire units will remain critical during peak fire conditions across the region.
