Windblown Dust Advisory Remains in Effect Across Coachella Valley

A windblown dust advisory remains in effect across the Coachella Valley through Sunday morning as strong winds continue to reduce air quality throughout the region.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District says wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected to generate blowing dust, creating periods of unhealthy air conditions.

Communities included in the advisory are Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Indio, La Quinta, Coachella and Mecca.

Health officials recommend residents stay indoors as much as possible, keeping windows and doors closed to reduce exposure to dust and fine particles. People with asthma, heart disease, respiratory conditions, older adults and young children are especially encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activities until air quality improves.

Drivers are also urged to use caution, particularly on dirt roads and in areas where blowing dust may reduce visibility. Officials advise slowing down and allowing extra stopping distance when traveling through dusty conditions.

The advisory is expected to remain in effect through Sunday morning, with conditions improving as winds begin to decrease.
