Palm Springs Shelter Dogs Found Dead in Rescue Investigation

The Palm Springs Animal Shelter has confirmed that two dogs it transferred to Miranda's Rescue in Humboldt County were found dead during an ongoing animal cruelty investigation in Northern California.

Authorities served a search warrant at the rescue on June 25 after receiving reports of suspected animal cruelty. Investigators discovered the remains of 117 dogs buried on the property, many with bullet fragments. Two of the dogs, Farkle and Felicia, were identified as puppies transferred from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter on April 1.

Executive Director Dan Rossi said the shelter believed Miranda's Rescue was a trusted partner after checking for complaints and maintaining communication following the transfers.

The shelter transferred 35 dogs to the nonprofit beginning in 2024 and has since terminated the partnership. Officials have also hired an attorney specializing in animal law to review transfer agreements and strengthen verification procedures.

According to authorities, Miranda's Rescue operator Shannon Miranda has not been charged, and the investigation remains ongoing. Shelter officials say they are still awaiting updates on the remaining 27 transferred dogs.
