San Francisco International and Tampa Top the Charts in New National Airport Enjoyability Study
Navigating through massive airport terminals can be an incredibly stressful hurdle during peak summer travel seasons, but a new data-driven study reveals which domestic hubs are successfully turning long waiting periods into an enjoyable experience. The comprehensive study, published by QR Code Generator, analyzed the nation's 31 busiest airports to create a definitive passenger enjoyability index. Topping the national chart is Florida's Tampa International Airport, while California's San Francisco International Airport earned high praise by clinching the fourth spot.
To determine the rankings, researchers analyzed several critical traveler touchpoints, including overall Google review ratings, the percentage of five-star reviews, independent FlightRadar24 satisfaction scores, terminal dining and retail metrics via Tripadvisor, and regional Google Keyword Planner search trends tracking lost luggage queries per 100,000 flyers. Each factor was given an individual index score, which was then compiled into an overall score out of 100 to rank the best domestic options for flyer experience.
Taking the absolute crown with a commanding index score of 71 out of 100, Tampa International Airport secured the highest overall Google rating of 4.6 out of 5 and boasted maximum five-star ratings on an impressive 74.11 percent of all its online feedback. The Florida airport also swept the top spot on FlightRadar24 with a satisfaction score of 88 out of 100. Following in second place with an overall index score of 63.9 was Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The Arizona hub stood out for its remarkable baggage reliability, scoring 97.4 for its lack of luggage issues due to an average monthly search volume of just 4.46 lost baggage queries per 100,000 passengers, which is 94 percent lower than the national study average.
Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport secured third place with an overall score of 62.4 out of 100, with more than 63.5 percent of its Google reviews achieving a perfect five-star score. San Francisco International Airport placed fourth nationally with a commendable overall index score of 60.7. The premier California gateway performed strongly across all evaluated criteria, heavily bolstered by a stellar FlightRadar24 passenger satisfaction score of 84 out of 100. Rounding out the top five was Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which achieved an overall score of 57.6, with more than 57 percent of its Google reviews reaching five stars.
The remainder of the top ten featured Orlando International Airport in sixth place with a score of 57.3, praised heavily for its passenger amenities. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport placed seventh at 57.0, taking the top honors among all analyzed airports in the state of Texas. Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport ranked eighth with an overall score of 56.1, followed by Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in ninth at 55.1. Completing the top ten leaderboard was Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport with a score of 53.6.
According to Marc Porcar, the chief executive officer of QR Code Generator, the findings demonstrate that a top-tier passenger experience is not solely defined by an endless grid of high-end shopping choices or massive dining concourses. Porcar noted that Tampa has fewer dining and shopping options than major hubs like John F. Kennedy International or Miami, yet its review scores are in a completely different league. He explained that this suggests core operational basics, such as clear navigation, efficient checkpoint processes, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere, matter far more to everyday travelers than simply having dozens of restaurants to choose from.
The index results offer strong reassurance for summer vacationers flying out of dominant regions like Texas and Florida, both of which managed to place two separate hubs on the top ten leaderboard. Porcar added that travelers using these top-rated hubs can take comfort during this busy travel season, knowing their choice of airport is statistically proven to minimize stress and offer a more relaxing, unwinding start to their vacations.
