Sober Advocate Kyndal Edwards Reaches Day 939 of Coast-to-Coast Mental Health Walk in North Carolina

A Florida man who is walking thousands of miles across all four corners of the United States to advocate for mental health and addiction recovery brought his inspiring message to eastern North Carolina last week. Pushing a stroller loaded with travel gear, Kyndal Ray Edwards passed through the coastal towns of Newport and Havelock, marking day 939 of a massive physical journey aimed at raising nationwide awareness, honoring lives lost to suicide or overdose, and proving that personal transformation is always possible.

Edwards began his multi-year, 10,000-mile trek on January 1, 2022, initially dipping his feet in the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, before spending the next several years walking coast to coast. The idea for the journey took root while he was serving his final prison sentence, as he watched families on social media constantly mourning loved ones lost to substance abuse and mental health challenges during the height of the pandemic. Less than two months after his release, he committed to translating his personal survival into a public mission, stepping out onto the open road to show others that a dark past does not define their future.

The cause is deeply personal for Edwards, who openly shares his history as a multi-time convicted felon who has survived severe drug overdoses and been booked into county jails 11 times and state prison twice. Today, he celebrates being more than seven years drug-free and has logged over 10,700 miles on foot. Along his route, he can be seen pushing a custom stroller emblazoned with a prominent sign reading "You Matter." Edwards uses the public attention to spread love, kindness, and positivity, noting that complete strangers frequently pull over on highways to hug him, weep, and confess that seeing his sign gave them the strength to keep living.

His walking journey also serves as a direct fundraiser for Never Alone Recovery, a specialized non-profit organization that provides comprehensive support, guidance, and resources to individuals battling active addiction and severe mental health disorders. Edwards' message resonated deeply with eastern North Carolina residents, including Newport resident Christy Edwards, who stopped to support the walker on the side of the road. She shared her own family's brush with tragedy, explaining that her daughter had faced intense bullying in school that culminated in a near-fatal drug overdose, though her daughter has since recovered and is doing exceptionally well today.

To those currently struggling in the depths of depression, isolation, or substance dependency, Edwards offers words of profound encouragement rooted in scientific reality. He frequently reminds people that the mathematical probability of any single human being being born is a staggering one in 400 trillion, framing every individual alive today as a biological miracle. He implores those in crisis to hold on, keep moving forward, and recognize their inherent value.

Edwards anticipates successfully concluding his expansive, cross-country perimeter trek this upcoming October when he reaches the northeasternmost point of the United States in Lubec, Maine, a feat that would secure a world record for continuous distance walked. So far, the advocate has raised nearly $6,000 for Never Alone Recovery, with an ultimate fundraising goal of $50,000 to expand long-term rehabilitation treatment options.
