Supreme Court Upholds Mail-In Ballot Grace Periods in Narrow 5-4 Decision

In the ruling, Barrett clarified that while federal election statutes require voters to make their final choice on Election Day, they remain entirely silent regarding the operational logistics of ballot receipt deadlines. Because the text of the congressional statutes does not stipulate a rigid cutoff for when election workers must receive a ballot, the majority concluded that the U.S. Constitution leaves such procedural management strictly to individual state legislatures.
The decision serves as a significant blow to President Trump, who has frequently leveraged his public platforms to criticize mail-in voting systems, routinely asserting without evidence that extended ballot collection windows compromise election integrity. Following the announcement of the ruling, Trump reacted via a social media post, urging conservative lawmakers in Congress to aggressively push forward with the passage of the SAVE America Act. The proposed federal legislation seeks to override state-level autonomy by establishing stringent national voting restrictions, including the near-total elimination of mail-in voting options, strict federal voter identification rules, and mandatory proof-of-citizenship registration requirements.
In a sharp dissent, Justice Samuel Alito criticized the majority's statutory interpretation, arguing that the decision misinterprets historical election statutes and upends standard election deadlines. Despite these objections, the high court's definitive ruling ensures that existing postmark grace periods across 14 states and Washington, D.C., will remain safely in place for the upcoming midterm elections, saving local administrators from a chaotic scramble to rewrite state voting rules just months before voters head to the polls.

Salton city resident Abraham Feinbloom is expected to take a plea deal in the murder case of 17 year old T’Neya Tovar. Under the plea deal obtained by the Imperial County Criminal Courthouse, Feinbloom will plead guilty to one count of torture and voluntary manslaughter. According to court records, he is also expected to assist law enforcement in finding the rest of the victim’s remains.
