Cathedral City Secures $4.5M State Grant to Boost Cannabis Enforcement

Cathedral City is getting a major boost in its efforts to regulate its growing cannabis industry.

The city has secured a $4.5 million state grant through California’s Proposition 64 Public Health and Safety Grant Program—money officials say will directly strengthen enforcement across multiple departments.

Erick Becerril says the funding comes at a critical time, as the city continues to navigate the challenges of overseeing one of the largest concentrations of cannabis businesses in the state.

While city leaders point to the growing industry as an economic driver, residents have continued to raise concerns—particularly about cannabis odor and the city’s ability to consistently enforce existing rules.

Officials say the new funding will help change that by providing additional resources for inspections, improving response times to complaints, and strengthening coordination between city departments tasked with oversight.

The city says it will also use the grant to target non-compliant operators and improve monitoring of facilities to ensure they are following local and state regulations.

Now, city leaders say the focus shifts to implementation—and whether the new resources will translate into noticeable improvements for residents who have long called for stronger action.
