Deadly Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Strikes Kyiv, Killing 11 and Damaging Civilian Sites

A devastating wave of Russian missiles and drones struck the Ukrainian capital early Thursday, July 2, 2026, leaving a trail of destruction across multiple residential neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that at least 11 people were killed in the assault. Tymur Tkachenko, Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that an additional 54 individuals were injured, including two children. According to administrative officials, extensive damage has been recorded across 30 distinct locations, primarily impacting residential buildings and civilian sites.

The coordinated barrage triggered immediate sirens throughout the capital. Following early warnings issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and local municipal authorities, thousands of residents rushed to seek safety inside underground metro stations.

Local residents described a chaotic and terrifying experience as explosions reverberated through the city during the pre-dawn hours. Yehor Novachyuk, a Kyiv resident, recalled the moment the strikes hit his neighborhood.

"It happened between 3 a.m. to 4 a.m.," Novachyuk said. "The building started to shake strongly, even at the parking lot the strong vibration was felt, and it was followed by the explosion. It was evident right away what happened nearby."

The physical toll on the civilian sector was immediately visible at dawn, with thick black smoke rising over the city skyline. First responders and rescue teams swarmed destruction sites, clearing heavy debris and shattered glass to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed apartment facades.

For the survivors, the psychological and material toll is staggering. Lyudmila Tsyapkova, a local resident, surveyed the severe damage inside her home with despair.

"What emotions I can have, it is horrible," Tsyapkova said. "I simply want to die and not see anyone. Windows of that room, this room [are broken]. Curtains are ripped off, in the kitchen too. Everything, do you understand?"

In the wake of what he described as a "night of horror" in Kyiv, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urgently appealed to international allies to reinforce the country's air defenses. Sybiha cautioned that the current death toll remains provisional and may continue to climb as emergency personnel press forward with rescue operations.

The lethal bombardment comes as Russia intensifies its air campaigns against Kyiv. This escalation follows Ukraine's parallel long-range drone campaign targeting military sites and critical energy facilities deep inside Russian territory, which has successfully triggered domestic fuel shortages and disrupted logistical supply lines for Moscow's forces.
