Manny the Movie Guy

Manny the Movie Guy highlights two new releases for the Fourth of July weekend. "Young Washington" explores the early struggles of America's first president before he became a legend, while "Minions and Monsters" delivers family-friendly laughs with the franchise's signature humor and Hollywood-inspired adventure.

Looking for a movie to enjoy over the Fourth of July weekend? Manny the Movie Guy has two very different recommendations hitting theaters, offering something for history buffs and families alike.

The first is "Young Washington," a historical drama that takes audiences back to the early years of George Washington before he became America's first president. Rather than focusing on the legendary figure remembered in history books, the film explores the failures, risks, and personal struggles that helped shape the future founding father.

Director John Irwin says releasing the film during America's 250th anniversary celebration makes the story especially meaningful, highlighting how Washington's early setbacks ultimately forged the leader who would change history.

Newcomer William Franklyn-Miller stars as the young George Washington, joined by Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley as Governor Robert Dinwiddie and Kelsey Grammer as Lord Thomas Fairfax. The cast says the film focuses on the human side of one of America's most recognizable historical figures, showing how mistakes and perseverance helped define his character.

For families looking for lighter entertainment, Manny also reviewed "Minions and Monsters," the latest adventure in the long-running Despicable Me franchise.

Set in 1927 Hollywood, the animated film follows a new group of Minions as they stumble into silent-era movie studios and attempt to create their own monster film. Filled with slapstick comedy, classic Hollywood references, colorful animation, and plenty of Minion mayhem, the movie is designed to entertain both children and adults.

Manny praised the film's humor, animation, and nostalgic movie references while noting the middle portion slows slightly before the action picks back up. He awarded "Minions and Monsters" three out of four "banana kisses," calling it a fun summer movie the entire family can enjoy.
